As a member of the Garfield's Girls Build club, I can safely say that it has been the highlight of my high school experience. Through the projects we are doing this year, I know that I am making a difference in my community. Additionally, because of our use of media, such as Instagram and our website, we are raising awareness for problems that affect us everyday, like the migrant caravan from Honduras. As a result of this, we have managed to bring our community together even further and this has inspired me to find other ways to empower young Latinx leaders everywhere. Finally, even though we are done with our project, it feels like we have only reached the tip of the iceberg in finding ways to help and empower other people.
OUR CHALLENGES/WHAT WOULD WE CHANGE?
Our project topic had changed several times over the course of months. All the girls on our Girls Build team knew our community faced so many difficulties and it was challenging to choose one solid topic that would make the best impact. We wound up choosing to continue last year’s project in the topic of immigration. If we had to do it all over again we think we would have started off right off the bat with seriously considering a continuation because it would have saved more time.
