Our team first began its journey by becoming civically engaged. Before we had even narrowed down our project topic, we wanted to engage ourselves in the community. Our team was given the opportunity to serve 100 students at a wellness fair to ensure that they were aware of different elements that could be detrimental to their health. Participating in this event allowed us to get acquainted with the members of East LA.
We also contributed to an effort to civically engage our students by hosting a voter registration event at our school for a week in hopes of preregistering students who weren’t of age to vote and encourage those who could to do so. We even managed to preregister and register over a hundred students and peers.
Currently, our team is offering resources to ensure that our community members feel safe and knowledgeable. We are also encouraging students to donate supplies for the refugees at the border. We believe that even a blanket or pair of warm socks can relieve some of the anxiety that is being felt by children stuck in the middle of the political madness that is affecting the border crisis.
OUR MAIN GOAL iN CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
We would like everyone to know that our movie can be used in any community. With our film, we want to show the importance of understanding the lives of others in order to ensure that people always feel accepted in this world. Our film does target communities with large immigrant populations but we invite anyone to share our documentary. We hope to open the immigration discussion in a manner that is respectful and informative!
